Burnout is a response to chronic stress, not a personal failing. What the research says about rest.
Tired is not weak
You can be capable and still be worn out. Constant pressure drains energy. That is a human response, not a flaw.
Burnout has an official definition. The WHO describes it as a syndrome that comes from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
What burnout looks like
The WHO names three signs. You feel drained. You feel distant or cynical about your work. You feel less effective at it.
The WHO calls burnout an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition. That does not make it less real. People do seek help for it.
Rest is part of the work
Rest is not a reward. It is how your body and mind recover. Regular sleep, breaks in the day and time away from work all count.
Gentle movement helps many people. So does saying no, sharing the load and asking for support.
When to get help
If exhaustion lasts for weeks, talk to your doctor. Tiredness can also come from low iron, thyroid conditions, poor sleep or low mood.
If you feel hopeless or unsafe, contact a mental health professional or a local helpline today.
